Alex responded to the appeal for players and has trained a number of times with the squad.
The qualification threshold is a 40% hearing loss across both ears, so the hearing ranges differ greatly across the squad.
A development match was held on April 30th and was superbly hosted by Derby RFC for both the mens and women squads with the opposition provided by Derby RFC Ladies and Mansfield RFC. The day was blessed with sunshine and the rugby was contested in great spirit.
England men ran out 72-26 winners and look a formidable squad.
To the casual spectator, the biggest difference from this match to a Saturday afternoon at ARFC is the greatly-reduced volume of noise from the pitch!

England Deaf Rugby was set up to enable the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people to get together and enjoy the sport of rugby union and be able to participate in every aspect whether training, match, or knowing socially that there aren't any communication barriers due to a common ground.
England Deaf Rugby Union (EDRU) was set up in the year 2003, as it was recognised that that there were quite a few Deaf and Hard of Hearing players who would like the opportunity to represent their country. The reason EDRU got set up was because there was the first ever Deaf Rugby World Championships which was held in New Zealand back in 2002
This identified a missing gap for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing players in England, so EDRU set up a team to compete.
